DESCRIPTION: PARTICIPANTS
WILL DESIGN, BUILD AND TEST A "RUBE GOLDBERG-LIKE DEVICE" WHICH
INCORPORATES AS MANY UNIQUE ACTION TRANSFERS AS POSSIBLE. (A MINIMUM
OF 5 IS REQUIRED) DEVICES WILL BE CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION.
THE COMPETITION:
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 2 PERSONS PER TEAM
1. TEAMS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING TASK WITH
THEIR DEVICE: TURN A PAGE IN A BOOK.
2. THE DEVICE WILL BE STARTED WITH A SWITCH, BUTTON OR SOME ACTION OF
THE TEAM. ONCE THE DEVICE HAS BEEN STARTED, THE TEAM MUST STEP BACK FROM
THE DEVICE AND ALLOW IT TO COMPLETE THE ACTIVITY WITHOUT ANY HELP FROM
THE TEAM.
3. THE DEVICE MUST FIT WITHIN AN IMAGINARY BOX THE SIZE OF 2 STANDARD
SCHOOL DESKS.
4. POINTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR EACH ACTION TRANSFER OVER THE REQUIRED FIVE.
5. EACH DEVICE MUST PASS A SAFETY INSPECTION BEFORE OPERATION. UNCONTROLLED
OR HAZARDOUS NON-SHIELDED, FALLING OR LAUNCHED OBJECTS, HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
OR SPILLS, HAZARDOUS FALMMABLE SUBSTANCES, OR OTHER POTENTIAL HAZARDS
CAN LEAD TO DISQUALIFICATION.
6. TEAMS MUST SUBMIT A FLOW CHART TO THE JUDGES THAT DESCRIBES THE SEQUENCE
IN WHICH THE ACTION TRANSFERS WILL OCCUR. THE 1 PAGE FLOW CHART MUST
BE EASY TO FOLLOW (WELL ORGANIZED, NEATLY DONE, MAY CONTAIN DIAGRAMS
AND BRIEF TEXT)
SCORING: THE SCORING
IS BASED ON THE NUMBER OF ACTION TRANSFERS (BEYOND THE REQUIRED
5). IDENTICAL REPEATED ACTION TRANSFERS OF THE SAME TYPE ARE ALLOWED
BUT NOT SCORED. FOR EXAMPLE, A ROLLING BALL FLIPPING A SWITCH WOULD
BE AN ACTION TRANSFER AND A SERIES OF CASCADING OBJECTS THAT CAUSE
THE NEXT ACTION WOULD REPRESENT AN ACTION TRANSFER. THE ROLLING
BALL AND THE DOMINOES COULD BE USED AGAIN, BUT NOT SCORED.
